For teacher Stacey Dunlop , staying organized and fostering collaboration between students is the key to seeing success in math!
The Post-it® Brand Team
As a middle school teacher, Stacey Dunlop uses Post-it® Notes for much more than keeping marking organized; they’re an essential part in the learning and development of her students’ math skills. To strengthen her students’ understanding of complicated math problems, Dunlop encourages collaboration using Post-it® Notes. Students are encouraged to ask questions on each other’s work, fostering a collaborative discussion about how to arrive at the correct answer – something Dunlop believes is essential in learning and development.
“Post-it® Notes work well because they stick easily and allow questions to be showcased to the entire group. Once students are done asking questions, each group responds to the questions on the Post-it® Notes.”
Dunlop uses a ‘gallery walk’ to help students better understand the problems that they’re trying to solve. During this exercise, students are grouped together, answering the same math question and rotating to other groups to review work and ask questions about how they came upon the answer. As part of this gallery walk, students answer a math problem on a Post-it® Tabletop Easel Pad, once complete each group’s answer is showcased on the wall. Students are encouraged to review their peers work and to use Post-it® Notes to ask their peers questions.
By using Post-it® Notes, Dunlop allows her students to think creatively and collaboratively, sharing ideas across the group and using teamwork to solve complex problems. With Dunlop’s collaborative process, students develop their own critical thinking skills, while also learning how to work well with others!
