Seeing as we’re a few weeks into the school year, it’s always enjoyable to keep things fresh and exciting in the classroom by coordinating your décor.
This week’s project is a neat DIY technique to add style to your chalkboard tools and prevent you from getting messy chalk dust on your hands.

The Scotch® Brand Team… xox
SKILL LEVEL: Easy
TIME NEEDED: Approximately 15-30 minutes
Scotch® Brand Supplies:
Scotch® Expressions Magic™ Tape, Blue Green
Scotch® Expressions Magic™ Tape, Glyphs
Scotch® Expressions Masking Tape, Lemon Lime
Scotch® Expressions Masking Tape, Mint Green
Scotch® Duct Tape, Metallic Berry
- Chalk brush
Plan and prep. Choose your colour scheme and select your product. If you want to replicate the design we have in this project, simply refer to list above. This tutorial will assume you’ve selected the items in this design.
Chalk design. Cut a piece of Scotch® Expressions Masking Tape, Lemon Lime about 1.5” in length. Wrap one end with it and overlap. Cut your second piece of masking tape the same length and wrap the end of the chalk directly beside your first piece to create a tape band that is two tape widths. Next, cut a piece of Scotch® Expressions Magic™ Tape, Blue Green approximately 1” long and wrap the end of the chalk over top of the Masking Tape. Trim the Magic™ Tape so you do not have any overlap. You can create different versions of this design by interchanging the masking tape using Scotch® Expressions Masking Tape, Mint Green or Scotch® Expressions Magic™ Tape, Glyphs.
Chalk design with Duct Tape. Repeat the process above using Scotch® Duct Tape, Metallic Berry. Begin by cutting a 1.5” piece and wrap one end of the chalk (overlapping if necessary.) To overlap, use Scotch® Expressions Magic™ Tape, Glyphs or Scotch® Expressions Magic™ Tape, Blue Green. Wrap it over the top portion of the Duct Tape creating a patterned band at the top. Use your fingernail to smooth any air pockets between the different types of tape.
Chalk brush detailed. Cover the back of the chalk brush too! Line a strip of Scotch® Duct Tape, Metallic Berry along one edge of the back of the brush and trim to length. Line a second strip alongside the first strip, but be careful not to overlap or leave a gap. Trim the tape to fit the brush, and use strips of coordinating Scotch® Expressions Magic™ Tape to create a pattern and cover any visible seams.
And there you go! A fun way to personalize your classroom tools to match your colour-scheme and avoid getting chalk dust on your hands.
